What we're learning! Reading: Since the beginning of the school year students have been reviewing the important skills and strategies that good readers use while reading texts. We have also been exploring and reading to comprehend informational texts. Writing: Students have been working to create narrative writings, and are now moving towards informational writing.
Word Work: This year we are using a new program called "Words their Way". This levels the students according to where they are in their phonics understanding and helps to build their knowledge through word sorts. Math: In math we have been working very hard on place value (hundreds, tens, and ones), expanding the values of each digit in a number, and solving multiple types of word problems. We are using the "close reading" strategy in order to help students break apart and understand what a word problem is asking them to do.
Social Studies: Our first quarter social studies unit was on civics and economics. This unit included studying concepts like "What does it mean to be a citizen of a community?" and "How can we be good citizens?". It also included discussions and activities around the meaning of goods and services.
Science: The first quarter science unit was on sound. This covered information such as what sound is, what causes sound, how we hear sound. We also learned what the pitch and volume of a sound are.
